I've re-read the article by Kazuo Unno and he makes no mention of 35mm
cameras, but says he brought home a Camedia C-1400XL and found it suitable
for insects. Captions under the photos mention C-2000 Zoom, C-2500L, and
C1400XL. The digital stuff seem to be concentrated in the Komoro Diary
section of his website. He seems to be famous in Japan as an insect
photographer, winning the Photographic Society of Japan award for best
photographic work of 1994, has published many books, has hosted many TV
programmes about his work, and is vice chairman of the Society of Scientific
Photography amongst other things.
