If the Varta 625PX is a mercury battery, no mod is necessary. If it's an
alkaline battery, he may put a resistor or diode in series with the meter
switch. This works okay for a while, but the alkaline battery has a problem
with voltage loss and that's as soon as you start to use it. So, if the
meter is calibrated to be dead on when you pick it up (and it's the alkaline
battery), as you use it, the voltage will start to fall, the needle falls
in the finder, you open the lens more to keep centering the needle, and
you've got overexposure.
The silver oxide mod that I do utilizes a battery which does not lose
voltage in the steep way that alkalines do.
