Service time on those lenses (the 35-70 3.6) was so high that when it cam
time to design a newer version, I bet one comment was to "make it without
the 370 ball bearings, will ya, please!"
Some techs would spend all day on one lens, the bulk of the time was spent
applying the (1mm) ball bearings one at a time  with a dab of grease to hold
it in place  with its 369 brothers long enough to get it assembled.  Huge
waste of valuable technician time back in those days  (heck, today too!)

I've never done one, don't plan to, but I understand unscrewing the front
lens tube will allow the BBs to start pouring out.  You see,  after the 2,
185 ball bearing races are assembled, the grease is washed out.
