Dear All,

You may remember I mentioned I had jammed my OM-2S :-( Well, I just
collected it from Mr. Chaing, the repairman I located here in Jakarta,
and it now works just fine! :-) As well as fixing the crossed wind
gears, he may have done something to make the winder run a bit more
smoothly too - it certainly feels like new. (The shutter speed ring is
still as stiff as ever but that wasn't his concern).

I realise that I now need to take a few photos to see if there's any
problem with shutter synchronisation, such as has been mentioned to me
as a possibility by an OM expert, but I'm optimistic. I was so pleased
(it's actually my birthday today) that I gave Mr. Chaing a 33% tip. His
asking price for the repair? Only Rp 75,000. That's currently about
US$10.00! A tip of $3.33 doesn't seem extravagant, now does it?

Mr. Chaing agreed that there are very few OMs in Indonesia. Most SLR
cameras here are N*k*n or C*n*n; he has quite a few of those on his
workbench (ugly looking things!) But he seemed to know all about the
OM-2S anyway. He put it through its paces in program, auto and manual
modes, including the mechanical (red) B and 60 settings, to show that
it was functioning.

The scarcity of OM cameras in Indoensia means, of course, a scarcity of
skilled repairers too. For information, should anyone be visiting
Jakarta any time and need his services, his contact details are:

Rt. Chaing, Jalan Kebon Kacang I No. 105, Jakarta 10240, Indonesia
Tel. +62 (021) 310 1809

Incidentally, after asking questions on the OM list about Oly
rangefinders, some time ago, I've gone ahead and ordered an Olympus
35SP from the new "Wide-Angle" website in Holland. I really wanted an
RF camera with a fast lens. The one on the 35SP is supposed to be
excellent and is not the same, apparently, as on the 35RD which is also
f1.7 - there's one extra element in the SP lens. The other advantages
of the 35SP that I've learned about, by the way, are spot metering
capability and a meter that works in manual mode - most don't on RF
cameras of that vintage. These advantages are partially offset, of
course, by the camera's extra large dimensions and the fact that the
meter sensor is not embedded in the lens surround but is separately
located next to the viewfinder. This means it can't compensate
automatically for filters. Anyway, I was prepared to pay the
asking price and packing and shipping charge. It doesn't seem
much of a gamble and I'm a bit of a collector at heart :-)

You can bet I'm going to take it to Mr. Chaing for a CLA when it
arrives.

Best regards to all,

Ray
