As bad as the taxes were in the Great White North, they've gotten worse.
It used to be that "gifts" and anything under about $75 usually went
through untaxed. These days I'm finding that expensive gifts and items
as low as $25 are being held for tax collection. In addition, most
provincial governments that have provincial tax now require importers to
collect provincial tax when an item enters the country. In Ontario that
means we get charged 7 0ST plus 8% PST for a grand total of 150lus
whatever brokerage fee the importer decides to charge you. It does add
quite a bit to the original sale price but it still ends up cheaper
than buying locally.
