While image stabilization may result in degraded images during static
set-ups such as landscapes, portrait, etc., it is actually a revolution for
those who do photojournalism and action photography with long lenses and
hand-held or monopod arrangements. In such instances, image stabilization
can result in superior images.

Secondly, image stabilization can allow for the use of smaller apertures
with longer shutter times. This can result in improved depth of field for
hand-held shots.

Lastly, image stabilization, by allowing for longer shutter speeds can
reduce the amount of weight that one has to carry. Instead of carrying a
super-heavy and expensive large aperture telephoto, a lighter small aperture
tele of equivalent length can be carried instead. Such a lens by allowing a
greater depth of field can often result in superior images than the large
aperture lens.

I think this really explains why Canon has become the camera of choice for
many photojournalists.

OM however, will always have its appeal for those who wish to have a tool
that will allow for the creation of images under difficult lighting
conditions and for macro use.
