The pro of buying the Tamron would be that it might put a 300/4.5 on the
market for me to purchase.

:-)

Seriously...buy some glass. The 300 would be a nice lens. I wish that I
could justify the cost.

Theres a good chance I'll have a modest ($1000-1500) windfall next
week. While some people would be tempted to waste this kind of money
on paying off mortgages, investments, or trips for the family, I have
every intention of spending it wisely: on camera gear.

I'm looking at three possible purchases:

1) Tokina or Tamron 300/2.8 - would replace my Zuiko 300/4.5 for
baseball season, helping me fight the low light problem that plagues
my spring and summer evenings. Might possibly get used for nature
shots, but I rarely use over 200 except for the occasional shot.

2) Zuiko 35-80/2.8 - would fill the gap I currently have between 38
and 100 (with the obvious exception of several 50s), would be great
for basketball (I currently shoot primarily at 100mm,occassionally
with the 50or 135), and could replace my 35-70/3.5-4.5 for a walking
around/vacation/news/party lens.

3) New Om-4T - my last new camera purchase was in 1981 when I bought
my OM-1n. My current 4T (bought used), while reliable, has been rode
hard and put up wet, and shows it. A new 4T would also let me shoot
with a pair of 4Ts

What do you see as the pros and cons of these purchases?
