I thought the Olympus was designated M-1 because it was Maitani's first SLR
design.

No doubt Olympus claims this as a defense to the notion that they
were infringing on Leica's holding a trademark on the name M-1
for camera equipment. Just like Nikon claims they didn't choose
their brand name to rhyme with "Ikon" of Zeiss Ikon.
yeah, right.
