yeah, i agree. 

I use filters for specific purposes, for example, a skylight or other 
warming filter when using flash, polarizers when shooting with lots of 
blue sky, color filters for B&W film, etc. 

I also agree that they can be used to protect a lens in adverse 
situations. I'm not a pro really, so I rarely have that as a reason to 
use one.

I have proven to myself at least that filters cause flare, and the 
color of the flare depends on whether the filter is coated or not, etc. 
The flare is white when uncoated, and maybe green or some other color 
when coated. Some coated filters don't produce flare that I can detect. 
I have a regular B+W polarizer that I have yet to make produce flare, 
maybe I should try a little harder....
