Jim,
I use filters for protection primarily, but I like to have a good enough
"protection" filter that I don't worry too much if I shoot with it in a
pinch.
I use mainly Skylights as protection filters. The 1B you mention is
slightly warmer than a 1A, but both are warmer than UV filters, which are
pretty much neutral. I don't know what a Skylight 0 is.
There are some filters I use for definite reasons: polarizer, a Nikon A2
or Tiffen warming filter, and a UV. I almost always use a skylight filter
with flash. (Oly flashes are a little cooler than the norm.)
Obviously a filter can't improve what your lens can do, so I think you're
better off not using it if you don't need its effect.
In the final analysis, its probably more like the decision between boxers
and briefs: you'll be less swayed by arguments than your own personal comfort.
