I have a hard time believing this is the case in Australia (!)

It's certainly not the case here in the US either.

The problem is that damn lazy people expect to be able to drive into some
parking lot and have a 'wilderness experience' without getting up off their fat
asses and walking a half mile down the trail.

God gave us two legs to be able to walk around with and not one for the brake
and one for the accelerator. 

You can drive or take a train fifty miles from NYC and get on a trail that has
only a handful of people all day.

The problem is not lack of land but a society that wants to experience life in
soundbites; 'do' the Grand Canyon in 1 hour, then get back in the car and drive
to the next place and 'do' it the same way. Pull out the idiot camera, take pix
of the family, and say you were there.
