Yes, indeed, the $40k+ LC is status. it matters not one whit that it sucks
at what the Jones' ask it to do: ferry ONE soccer mom, an occasional
pooch or spoiled brat, pick up groceries, and other mundane chores better
and more efficiently done with a sedan. Hell, you can get a Mercedes C220
or BMW 323i for that money, and still have spare change. But SUVs have
become a way to flaunt wealth/disposable income. After all, if you can
spend that much on car that guzzles dead dinosaurs, you MUST have too much
money on your hand. Sad. Oh, and get this: a Ford Explorer is relatively
cheap, so Ford rebadges it as a Mercury and makes another large profit.
Toyota does the same with the Lexus LX 470, as so many others.
