New slaves also detect the flash going off, and sent the quench signal to
the flash as well. So they can be used for TTL.
Or so I've read.

Flash slaves work by detecting a flash opticaly, and firing any attached
flash.
They work one-way, so no TTL control. Usually solid state & batteryless.
