I think you mentioned the reason> The Minox' tiny negative size, and
therefore tiny coverage area, makes a lens designer's job easier. The hard
part of lens design is to get it to perform well all over the coverage area.

This is not meant to belittle the Minox...after all, it's just as easy to
come up with a bad lens...but somehow I doubt the same design would work in
a 50 with a 36mm coverage circle.

When my 50/2 Zuiko Macro arrives, sometime in the next week, I'll find out
firsthand what an outstanding performer really does in real life...wonder
how it compares.
