First let me say that yes, HP rebate offer was a *major* factor in my
purchase of the photo scanner and printer. My referring to them as
"gizmos" is more an expression of my cynicism. I have been programming,
maintaining, teaching and supporting software, hardware and users for
the last fifteen years. Yes, I do like its high resolution scanning
capabilities up to 2400 dpi in 30 bit pixel depth. Also the fact that it
can scan 35mm negatives/mounted slides a photos up to 5x7.
The HP software included is capable of creating image files in TIFF,
JPEG, BMP and FlashPix formats or direct output to the HP Photo printer,
other printer or to a software program like Photo Shop Deluxe, Paint
Shop Pro, etc... The software also features basic image manipulation,
rotating, cropping, color adjustment and adjust "exposure" high, mid and
low tones. The photo printer produces *very* sharp, photographic?
quality images. Using two multi-dye inkjet cartridges.
As far the SCSI interface card it is compatible with Adaptecs ASPI
specifications and uses Adaptec drivers. So, the card isn't proprietary
and the scanner should interface well with most available SCSI cards. At
work I have an HP 4p flatbed scanner connected to an older ADAPTEC SCSI
card, it works fine. The scanner has two SCSI ports allowing multiple
SCSI devices to be chained togeher as I have done with the PhotoScanner
and my HP 5p flatbed scanner, both work fine. So installing only one
card or using an existing card is nessecary. Lastly, HP has a very good
online support page at http://www.photosmart.com/ for any problems
encountered.

In response to Greg's comments: I agree the D500L is a fine digital
camera despite its lower than a slide scanners resolution. The lack of
features you mentioned are addressed in Olympus's newly available D620L.
(as of late November in the US) Among its features; spot metering,
external flash sync and to a lesser degree a threaded barrel allowing
lens attachments for macro, wide angle and telephoto accesories and
filters. The former reminds me of my set of Tiffen close-up lenses. I
have seen the D620L available for around $1100.00 US. Remember the price
WILL drop as time passes. I'm just not quite ready to forsake my OM1, so
much to do with it yet. For more information check out the following
pages: http://www.photosmart.com/ and http://www.dcresource.com/
