S/N won't help, but the best way to tell is to hold the lens under
a specular light source. an overhead light fixture in a room at home
works well-- have it be the only source of light. Look at the sequence
of reflections of the light fixture. If it contains only purple and amber,
it is a single coated lens, but if it has green and/or blue, then it is
multicoated.

Olympus changed their multicoating one or more times over the years, so
two multicoated lenses won't have teh exact same rendition of sequence
of reflections, but the presence of blue or green indicates multicoating.

Of course, lenses marked Zuiko MC are multicoated, but after about 1984,
all Zuikos were multicoated and the MC was dropped. Thus, havinga lens
marked Zuiko MC is sufficient, but not necessary for the lens to be
multicoated. Knowing when the lens was purchased new is another sufficient
condition (after 1984, it is multicoated, although it might be theoretically
possible that a lens bought in, say, 1990 had been sitting on a shelf at a
dealer for 10 years).

Hope that helps,

Joseph
