Actually, some lenses let you focus "beyond" infinity. No kidding.
Some long lenses (especially mirror lenses) are sufficiently temperature
sensitive that their focal length varies noticeably. As a result, they
are designed to focus "beyond" infinity to allow for the variation.
(Manufacturing tolerances are also a consideration.)
