Another list I participate in did an comparison of 35mm scanners. I'd offer
their results, but I expect they would not be valid due to the unique
attributes of astrophotography. One of the more robust topics of discussion
is what would a valid basis of comparision be? They decided on using a USAF
1951 test target slide, which one of the guys bought and snail mailed
around. This slide is quite expensive and has taken a while to find its way
back home, but it did without being too much worse for the wear. They also
used a "standard color negative" and astro negatives, one each color and
B&W. The process was also agreed upon in advance.

It was an exciting project to watch progress - I did not have a scanner at
the time or would have gladly participated. This list could do something
similar. I believe our requirements are less complex, since we aren't
really concerned about OIII emission lines and such matters. I think
something along the lines of a "standard" color negative, a "standard" color
slide and a "standard" B&W negative that would be mailed to each tester is
sufficient. Each model was represented up to three times to minimize sample
variances. Each tester would process the three films in the same way, or as
close as the specific device will allow, and make careful observations and
notes. The resulting scans are then published to a web site and the results
summarized here on the list. The interested reader may then peruse the
website at his/her leisure.

I have an HP PhotoSmart print/slide/negative scanner to offer as one model
to participate. I have a Kodak "standard" negative for color film. It's
old, but it'll work. I also have web space if needed. Oh Great and
Omnipotent "Curator" <g>, is there available space on the Gallery site? If
folks are interested and willing to participate in a fairly rigorous testing
process, I'm game.

For an astro shooters perspective on scanners, take a look at:

Also take a few minutes to look at some of the magnificent images Phillip
has made. Ahhhhhhh.... the stuff of inspiration.......
