The magnet that locks the mirror when you have dead or no batteries,
also holds the mirror during self timer. It (the magnet) is hard to get
to, the mirror box must be removed from the main casting to get to it
and clean/replace it.
It is fixable despite the difficulty.
If you fire one of these cameras (the ones that fire w/o batteries), set
to self timer WITH batteries and WITH the body cap on, the shutter will
start a time exposure, but the PCV will beep as if its starting the self
timer mode (when, of course, it isn't). Remove the cap, the shutter
closes the beeping stops.
