Is there any reason a resistor couldn't be used here instead of a diode?
That would be my first inclination.

Seems like this would be a better and more accurate solution (if you
only need one, you could even pop for the ultra-high grade version :).

Maybe I'm missing something, I only know enough about electronics to be
dangerous.

A simpler solution is to use Zinc-air hearing aid batteries with an
adapter ( I used an old px13 shell). Battery needs some venting for
air but gives 1.4 volts very consistently.
