Yes, in ambient mode, the shutter will control the amount of light to film
plan. In OTF flash mode, if light are enough, the camera circuit will send
signal to the flash and cut the light output.

So, what you have to do may be try to frame in a larger portion of your
object and depends on the situation, set the exposure compensation to -1/3
to -1 stop.

GN is stand for Guide Number, e.g. Olympus T32 quoted GN 32/m. At full
power out, if your object is 1m from the flash than you have to set your
lens to f32; 4m set to 32/4 = f8 ...etc. Please note the actual GN figure
of you flash may not be same as quoted. Also, if there is strong ambient
light, you have to account for that. For ambient light of two stop or more
under, you may ignore it.
