This is indeed a confusing issue. The original series of lenses for the OM-1
were produced with the silver front barrell. When the OM-2 came out in 1975,
the barrell front was officially changed to black. Apparently, however,
Olympus had a large stock of silver front barrells left over. This means
that there is really no method to the madness and the the two colors were
used interchangibly until the late 70's when the stock of silver barrells
was finally depleted. As far as multi-coating, the word according to Olympus
America is that if the lens is labled F. ZUIKO,
G. ZUIKO, etc., the lens is single coated. If the lens is labled ZUIKO MC or
just plain ZUIKO, the lens is multicoated. Just another chapter in the
Olympus saga.
