Sorry to interject here, but has anyone actually put the camera on B and
held the shutter open, (mirror up) while looking inside. Anyone notice the
back of the mirror assembly is actually a metal plate with a flap that
retracts when the mirror is up?

Just wondered?

Except that the light travels different paths. Light from the viewfinder
would come straight down to the mirror, throught the partially silvered
area and straight to the bottom of the camera. Light from a lens goes
straight, horizontally, through the partially silvered area of the main
mirror and is reflected off the secondary mirror so that it does not go
straight down but goes forward as well as downward so that it can reach the
recessed light sensing element that is designed to face rearward and
frequently is used to read reflected light off the film and shutter curtain
as well.
