I agree, John, and the number must be 1-8.

I quote from Mannheim (The Olympus Way):

"The 1-8 screen looks similar to the 1-4 screen, but the matted
surface is extra fine and the central Fresnel-free circle has a 9 mm
diameter. Out-of-focus image details appear with a luminous soft-focus
effect due to the light scatter by the Fresnel pattern. This screen is
specially designed for the longer tele lenses, but is also fine with
medium long focus lenses and usable even with standard and wide-angle
lenses down to 35mm. It is also suitable for mactophotography and the
fine screen facilitates precise focusing with the Varimagni finder.
Meter readings on the screen indicate corect settings."

But I take the liberty to quote also what L. Andrew Mannheim has to
say about MY favorite macro screen, 1-11:

"The 1-11 screen is a matt screen of extra fine grain (similar to the
1-8) but with a 4 mm clear central spot carrying crosshair graticule
marks. it is intended for low-magnification macrophotography with the
80mm macro lens; the clear centre spot is ideal also for aerial
focusing in high-magnification macrophotography. The centre graticule
area is further useful as an aiming point with long focus tele lenses
where the fine screen grain facilitates focusing (but the clear spot
cannot be used for this putpose). As on the 1-8 screen, unsharp image
detail appears with a luminous soft-focus effect. meter readings
indicate correct exposure settings."

Amen, I must say, after these words from my Olympus bible.
(I should really buy a scanner some time...)

IMHO you just simply cannot do without this screen when attempting
serious macro work.
