If you really want to get every photon, you can add another of the
old tricks: Pre-expose the film with diffuse light. Every film has
a critical exposure level. It does not begin to darken until that
level has been reached. By pre-exposing the film to just below the
critical level, the sensitivity effectively is increased. And it does
not sacrifise the shadow details. It takes some experimenting to get
it right.

(This might be a feature for the ultimate OM camera: Built in
pre-exposure. Mount a few tiny lamps around the lens to give the 
small, diffuse exposure. But C*n*n did it first on the F1 :-(
Probably patented it also...)
