Heavy clouds overhead with the sun breaking through on the horizon. Even snow with no light is dark. I doubt any film combination would have done any better. Maybe a graduated neutral density filter. Or one of those routines where you expose for the foreground and take a shot too. Then merge them in Photoshop.
