Hi Piers,Nice hearing from you and thanks for looking. I added a few more of
Marnie's shots with the OM-1 and one of mine with the same.
I must say it was one of my favorite trips. It is remote, a bit exotic but
very doable logistics. I would go soon as the Chinese are building roads
furiously and the Kyrgyz will pay down the road. It is clear they wish to mine
rare earths near the Sary Jaz valley and I fear environmental degradation.
Curiously we stayed in a beautiful hotel in Karakol owned by our logistics
manager's mother. I saw all these gorgeous large prints by Albert Dros --- I
have seen his images on Fredmiranda. He has a Kyrgyz wife. I recognized a
print of the Canyon of Forgotten Rivers. Albert Dros was pouring over google
maps and found what should be a very very interesting spot for photography. He
contacted Aidar's brother (our logistics person and highly skilled
mountaineer). His brother did know of the spot as did a very few other locals.
After he published those images, it became much more popular spot. It is
great for drone photography and it was one of my first ever drone shots outside
practicing taking images of my house's roof. I hope it isn't overrun but it is
a moderate hike to get there, so that may keep traffic down. Most of the yurt
stays were excellent but the camping wasn't our cup of tea, but there is no
choice to see some of the best remote scenic areas. All the other people
cancelled so it was just Marnie and I along with the organizer photog, Aidar
and a chef for when we camped. Getting to the glacier near Karakol peak
required about 4.5 hrs on horseback after 3-4 hours in a very high clearance
vehicle--much easier than the very long hike. The road had washed out some
had to carry our camera gear over some dodgy boulders with rushing storm
swollen river close by. Overall a very interesting trip. Thank again for
looking. I still have to get my film developed. I have only processed a few
images and hope they are a few more keepers to be had.
