What is this “flash” of which you speak? :-)

Seriously, last summer I messed around with macro photography and two flashes.
I am using an OM-1 Mark II. I used the little flash that came with the camera
plus an Oly FL-600 I’d picked up at a fire sale price. I used TTL on one flash
and a hot shoe trigger stand with the other. Unfortunately, I don’t remember
exactly what I did. I remember that it took a bit of doing, but eventually I
got it to work right.

Sometimes I think that TTL flash is just a way for the camera manufacturers to
“persuade“ us to buy their ridiculously priced proprietary flashes. Like all
automation, it works very nicely until it doesn’t. Theoretically, it should
work better than the flash’s own sensor. Theoretically. So on the few occasions
that I do use flash, I just let the flash’s sensor set the general light
output, then take a test shot and tweak exposure or the flash’s +/- setting.

And then there’s available light plus a fill flash set to 1/4 to 1/8 the
general exposure. Works nicely and doesn’t blast the subject’s eyes.

Dr. Flash would have reminded me that TTL metering for focus bracketing is not
the way to go due to potential inconsistencies of the metering. The manual
for the R2
Nano is very vague but has a feature called "TCM" which is TTL convert to
manual. The switch to turn it on is a bit buried in teh menu and the MF-12
macro flashes
are not listed as an option. I turned it on and chose a low powered flash and
then had to set the cam to non zero recharge time---0.1 sec. I took the TTL
shot and
turned the nano to manual and Voilà the metering was OK. I then turned on the
focus bracket and it worked OK. It is a bit slow (on the cusp of too slow
to use) and I wonder if would be better on the OM-1 Mk2. Another option is to
do the same TTL metering, convert to manual and use the sequential shutter with
all mechanical
at 5 fps. The bracket would be by moving the cam but max sync speed would go
from 1/100 for the e-shutter used by focus bracket to 1/250. I could find no
real
directions for this or tutorials that instructed on the MF-12 in this age
YouTube for everything. Of course, an off axis high quality LED would be
simpler. Never
stopped me. ;-)
