Moose is visiting and had the opportunity to try the MF-12 macro flash on his
OM-1 mkII with the Flashpoint R2 nano trigger and compared its performance to
my mkI. It was a bit fussier to set up than anticipated. Not unsurprisingly
Dr. No flash had the flash turned off and the single test shot for the TTL
metering doesn’t like e-shutter. Also a bit like on Sony, the trigger can be
finicky in getting seated well. I had to take it off a couple times to fix
that. Once it is going it is fine. I’ve never had that issue with my OM-1
mkI but the Sony trigger is notoriously finicky in this way. Once it’s going
just leave it on and it is perfect.
So you take the metering shot in TTL (no e-shutter; EFC ok or mechanical
shutter) and just one touch on the R2 nano trigger to convert to manual. This
is called TCM—-“TTL convert to manual.” I chose .1 sec recharge time—- it
has to be non zero. The focus bracketing with flash is MUCH faster on the
mkII. It is eminently useable. It is almost too slow on the mkI to be
practical. Curiously the focus bracketing uses the e-shutter but it still
works. Down side of that is the sync speed is 1/100 sec.
Surprisingly I have seen no good tutorials with this or even decent
documentation of any sort. Moose was kind enough to let me mess with his
settings.
We had a good visit. I used my OM-2 last year but all digital this year for
his visit so this post isn’t 100% on topic.
