The bad weather during late March/early April meant that there is snow in the
mountains. Now the weather is warm and sunny as it should be at this time of
year, and our beaches in Alicante are getting crowded as they should (and as
the lifting of various Covid restrictions make travel easier). On the spur of
the moment, we decided to spend a couple of days in Sierra Nevada, 400 km from
Alicante, so that my wife could do some skiing for the first time since March
2019. We drove down here yesterday, my wife hit the slopes in the afternoon
while I drove around in the mountains a bit and then walked around the ski
village Pradollano where we are staying. Five images.

Pradollano is about 30 km from Granada, reached by road A-395. But the road
continues further up, and I drove as far as I could (the road is closed at
about km. 36). From there, at an altitude of around 2400 meters, I had a nice
view of the slopes and the peak Mulhacén, the highest mountain on the Iberian
peninsula at about 3500 meters:

The was snow on the side of the road. The temperature was a very springlike
13C, so the snow exposed to the sun was melting, but there were a lot of people
playing around in it. I suppose these were non-skiers who just wanted to enjoy
a bit of late winter:

The I drove back to Pradollano where the sun was shining, the temperature was
16-17C, and much to my delight, I saw one of the professional cycling teams
getting ready for some training rides in the mountains. I was not the only one
who stopped to admire the magnificent bikes:

A couple of the cyclists arrived and there was some friendly talk with the
mechanics, the unsung heros of any pro bicycle race. Interestingly, they were
speaking Italian, which I know from elsewhere is a common language on the pro
cycling circuit in Europe. The cyclists posed with the mechanics:

And then they were off:

This morning (Monday) my wife will ski some more, and I will drive down to
Granada and take a walk in the city.

Cheers,
Nathan
