BUT - for me, it ignores a significant side benefit of the Denoise training. It
makes the best capture sharpener I've seen. I know that's not what it's sold
as, but it's terrific.

Because it's what I was working on at the time, and I had a subject with a wide range of
colors, , brightness, detail, textures, etc., this examples are from the Panny ZS200,
1"
sensor.<http://www.moosemystic.net/Gallery/tech/Process/Topaz%20AI/Denoise_as_Sharpen/Denoise_Sharp.htm>

Even with the shadows raised a bit, there's no noise problem, so I don't need a
noise remover. But look at the increase in clear detail! If you don't at first
see a difference between the last two, look around at different parts. If you
don't see a different between the first two, get your eyes checked.

You still need to do the MoosePhotoBlog!

Are you offering to set it up and run it? 😉 😁

As I've mentioned, I thought I had an outlet on TOP, but Mike turns out to be, or have become, forgetful/flaky, as his once long time columnist, Ctein, has also discovered.

The other big problem, of course, would have been the blog format he uses,
which only allows tiny images.

It did take some close observation to see the differences in your images at
first. I have noticed with Sharpen AI, at the 100% crop view, some definite
artifacts occur, particularly with the auto settings, as you have noted.

Yup, Auto in Sharpen AI is usually too strong. Care in settings and choice of Mode will usually, but not always, give a good result. I've come to the conclusion that all the wonderful IS in our bodies and lenses, perhaps together with subtle subject movement has much more effect on long lens shots than I'd thought before. In those cases, the Motion mode occasionally works miracles.

Hence your observation that Denoise AI clear is a good sharpener.

Slight clarification. I'm not picking out the Clear Mode as generally the best detail revealer. It depends on camera, subject and ISO. With larger sensors and base ISOs, the Standard Mode is almost always best. My default settings for that are 21, 1, 15,0.

With the 1" sensor and with higher ISOs the balance starts to slide toward
Clear.

My intent was not to push a particular Mode as best, but to highlight how well Denoise AI works as a sharpening tool - sometimes - much of the time.

Had I run this test comparison on an A7RII file, the winner would almost
certainly be Standard Mode.

Low Light Mode seems pretty useless, until I run into the file that needs it.

Some discussion on PureRaw:

Seems people are to easily convinced about "truth" with anecdotal samples.

We are creatures that easily make conclusions based on symptoms or anecdotal
examples, while deeper investigation often reveals something else entirely.

We didn't have large sample sizes and powerful data analysis when evolving. 😁
Annoying, though.

How sharp Moose
