_If_ the xmp files exist (its optional in LR whether to create them or not)
then it’s an almost trivial exercise to rebuild the database catalog.
If they don’t exist then it will be a job of going back over old backups to
find the most recent one with an intact database.

Sorry Moose - I don’t know what you mean by “have they [the image files]
been absorbed into LR?”
The images are _always_ just sitting in an operating system folder on a
disk.
