Hi
Following the need identified when I photographed a trapped wasp, I have
purchased a pair of Me*ke automatic micro 4/3rds extension tubes from the
Bay for use with my OMD-EM5 and the kit lens. They have arrived very
promptly and function on the camera but I am a little concerned because
they are a very tight fit with each other, camera and lens, much more so
than my Olympus Zuiko extension tube which needs to be used with an adaptor
and Zuiko lenses. And I have a reputation for a strong wrist for many
purposes!
Should I consider a touch of some lubricant to help the sliding metal
surfaces, perhaps a silicone oil using a drop on a lint free cloth to
apply? Or is that asking for trouble?
Any advice appreciated.
Brian
Oil can get onto the sensor and is hard to clean off. I would try to sand down
with fine paper first. Sometimes it is sharp edges that bind. Without looking
at them, though, I'm just making a guess. I have some Nye grease that is very
thick that would be safer, but not sure lubrication is the best solution. Once
you get it on, you will eventually have to get it off.

I too would steer clear of lubricants. With a lens to body connection, there is one spring loaded set of contacts. A tube has brass ends connected with brass plated springs. The inexpensive ones such as you and I bought do not have gold plated contacts

Thus, What was one pressure contact becomes four. When I was playing with extension tubes, I found that I had to occasionally take it all apart and wipe all the contacts. Stack two tubes, and occasionally becomes often.

Just one thin layer of oil, on one contact, and things stop working properly.

I would also not sand plated surfaces. Go through the thin plating and bad things are likely to happen. Aren't the mounts plastic?

One of the problems tube makers have to deal with is the quality of the springs that hold the mating surfaces together. Cheap spring material needs to be tight at first, as it will relax with use. One thing I found with tubes was hat a relatively heavy lens, the Oly 75-300, at that time, would compress the top spring, leaving a small gap 'tween lens and tube at the top.

What I would do is either decide to deal with what I've got, hoping it will
loosen up, or return them and try another brand.

I'm not entirely sure how I ended up with so many tubes. I have 10 & 16 mm sets, one labeled "Skyblue" and one without brand. Then a set of MOVO 10, 16 & 21 mm tubes. I think I bought them to get more extension without stacking tubes, but never used them, as I moved to achromatic C-U lenses.

Anyway, none of the tubes I have are tight to put on and off.
