Good to know my case is not unique.  It has happened with more than one lens.  I wonder if an eraser applied to the camera lens mount contacts would be in order?

I have never had to remove the  battery to get it restored; just kept trying and it eventually started working.

I love the E-1 as a change of pace device. The only problem I ever have

Oh, most definitely. However, that's usually related to the setting
that holds off on the shutter until it's in focus.

When taking a series of short or long bursts, where I'm deep into the
buffer, there is the occasional lock-up where the camera just goes
away and never comes back. I'll have to pop the battery. When that
happens, I lose the images in the buffer and sometimes the last couple
images before that. It's something I've seen happen with every E-1
I've used.
