Before I recently acquired the Sony, I spent time testing out the
various cameras to see which EVF worked for me in sunlight. The
Panasonic DMC-GX85 is really pretty awful in this regard (as compared
to OVF), and is a point of frustration. The Panasonic G9 was very
good. The E-m1 Mk3 was exceptionally good except my polarizing
sunglasses caused significant darkening across the EVF with a strange
diagonal pattern. Honestly, though, every EVF is a pain as compared to
OVF.

The Sony is better than most, but I did find a setting that vastly
improved it. I changed the "Live View Display - Setting Effect" to
OFF. This does a reasonable job of mimicking an OVF that just
represents what is coming through the lens. Still not as bright and
contrasty as I wish, but still not too shabby.

Back in the nineties, I bought a camcorder that had a nifty feature.
The color EVF was backlit with artifical light, but it also had an
illumination window that let sunlight backlight the LCD display. Even
in the brightest sunlight, the EVF was pretty visible, but it did tend
to wash out a little because of the lack of contrast range.
