 Hi Moose,
I admit, Pilsner is my favorite kind of beer. I also abhor IPA's since I have
that pesky little gene that makes cilantro flavored dishes taste like a soap.
The IPA's taste pretty much like a soap to me too.
Having said that, I have tasted number of IPA's that are better than the
Urquell, which in current incarnation reminds me of Heineken. Heineken is well,
pretty bad. I would probably like the original Urquell, but no one "makes them
like that anymore". The Pilsners I grew up with were better than any ale or
Belgian beer I have ever had. The current Urquell is too sweet, kinda gives you
the sugar shock Welsh's grape juice does. It is made to last for a looong time,
the ones I grew up with had about three-four days expiration date. After that
they developed stuff that resembled rags swimming in the liquid, tasted sour
and gave you diarrhea. TMI i guess...:)Actually, the Einbecker is very good for
a beer made to last and it is a notch above the rest, but I placed it in the
lower tier category, because thats where its standing is compared to the beers
I just described.
My son works part time at a local liquor store (we have tons of those around
here...) while in college and I would have him get me the Trummer Pils. I shall
report my findings here as soon as I succeed. Pretty sure I would like it.
Also, I always liked the SF beer scene. It is on no one's bucket list, but I
always thought that the Anchor Steam is a great general ale and actually crave
it from time to time.
Best
Boris

One must then ask if you approve of the current incarnation of Pilsner Urquell.
As the original, "Pilsner (also pilsner or simply pils) is a type of pale
lager. It takes its name from the Czech city of Pilsen, where it was first
produced in1842. The world’s first blond lager, the original Pilsner Urquell,
is still produced there today." <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilsner>If not,
then one might think your preference in pilsners is idiosyncratic. If so, I
hope Trummer Pils is soon marketed in your area. We are lucky here to have
international gold and silver medal winning Trummer Pils made locally, with
allimported Austrian ingredients but the water.
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilsner>Spectacular local beers of many kinds,
including the Pliny the Elder Imperial
IPA that started this conversation.

Berkeley is also where the first micro brewer challenged Federal Law and won in
court, making the whole endless array of micro brews possible.Moderate Beer
