Philippe
Somewhat envious of your forthcoming trip. We visited Capetown, (and the
Garden route), Durban, Hluhuwe (and the Drakensburg) in 1997 on a trip of a
lifetime for my wife and I during which we used lots of film in Olympus
cameras. We had the benefit of help from numerous relatives in the Capetown
area and Pietermaritzburg near Durban.
If, as I expect, you are using a hire car, make sure you know how to remove
the key from the ignition! You will probably need it to get into the boot
but the hire company may forget to tell you that there is a button to press
to release the key (To prevent it being snatched through an open window).
Been there, done that!
Even in 1967, people were worried that we walked round a market in Durban
openly carrying cameras. Be prepared to see traffic police carrying rifles!
Baboons love climbing over cars and removing any 'loose' equipment
(additional mirrors for caravans, possibly windscreen wiper blades) so
beware.
In Hluhuwe, visitors were able to drive around in their own cars, but use a
map as well as relying on road signs which can be moved by elephants! And
keep your eyes open, we saw quite a few white rhino close to the roads.
Finally, be prepared for a sub tropical country in high summer! (We went in
September.)
Regards
Brian
