Nothing says "I'm a complete imbecile" quite like a fart-tube on a
rusted out Honda Civic.
There are certain vehicles that have cold start noises near perfect.
My BMW X5 has a gated exhaust that is "supposed" to keep things quiet
until the engine is warmed up and when in a normal mode of driving.
It'll stay closed unless it's warmed up AND you are getting on it. My
solenoid seized up in the closed position, so I did the common
"repair" which is to bypass it and leave the gate fully open all the
time. The throaty sound is impressive. If I want to really make things
more interesting, I'll pop the gear selector in DS (which changes
shift points, runs it two gears lower than normal, and keeps the turbo
spinning) and let her rip in an echoey spot, like an underpass or a
downtown district. The turbo whine combined with that high compression
V6 cranking up the RPMs makes people wonder which vehicle is the
source of that sound as the only thing there is some city-slicker SUV.
