He saw this Golden Eagle flying around from tree to tree yesterday
morning and managed to squeeze off a shot when it lighted in a pine tree.
There is a riparian area about four miles away, and these can be seen there on
occasion along with other large birds. But, we have had a dire lack of rain
this winter so food must be getting scarce. They will go after small dogs and
cats.

Bald Eagles are primarily fish eaters

Golden Eagles are primarily ground animal eaters, rodents, snakes, etc.

Both are opportunistic eaters of almost anything that they come across, including stealing food or carrion from other, smaller birds.

First years of both species are virtually indistinguishable, before the Balds
develop the white head.

A local wildlife shelter had an adult Golden that couldn't fly. It had mistakenly been fed an all fish diet as a fallen nestling/fledge, and it's bones didn't develop correctly - or so they said.
