This thread worried me, so over Xmas I copied a lot of CDs to a NAS
box. They were all written in 2005-2006. Memorex CDROMs that have
been stored in CD "albums".
I successfully copied over 6,000 images. Only one file failed to
copy, even after the meths treatment.
I did find Windows drag and drop to be dreadfully slow. It took 40
minutes or more to copy a single CD with the drive clicking away,
presumably repeatedly seeking between the directory and data. After a
few CDs I switched to Robocopy, which would move a full CD to the NAS
in about four minutes.

The US equivalent is 'denatured alcohol'.
Methylated spirits is mostly ethyl alcohol, and in the past
'denatured' with methyl alcohol to discourage drinking. These days it
contains bittering agents and sometimes colour dye.
I imagine you might be able to use iso-propyl alcohol (sold as rubbing
alcohol in the US, though you'd have to be careful to make sure it was
only IPA and water, some have oils etc. added)
