I carry one of these. No monthly subscription required. With the huge 
number of totally unprepared hikers out there these days I suspect I 
would probably need to trigger it for someone else.

If some form of communication is desired then I recommend the 
DeLorme-inReach, NOT the new Garmin unit. Garmin bought out DeLorme, 
paired it with a mediocre gps and raised the price. Get the old units 
while you can.
