With film, UV filters are usually important, but with digital even at high

Good catch. I hadn't thought about that.

I did a lot of research and testing back in film days, occasioned by troubles our Canadian clergyman had with his images from the Andes. My conclusion was that filters were necessary for proper WB at altitude. No good solutions in post.

Howsomever, If the reputed cutoffs of 430 nm. for Panny sensors and 390 for Oly are reasonably sharp, it would seem that no UV filters are needed, as they are as or more effective than the commonly used filters.

I certainly can't see a thing wrong in the color with this panorama of a meadow at 9,400+ ft., just below Tioga Pass in Yosemite NP. <http://galleries.moosemystic.net/MooseFoto/index.php?gallery=California/Yosemite/Miscellaneous&image=_1140934-38oof30.jpg>

Perhaps not ideally, for the porpoise at hand, taken with a Panny GX7.

But at 8,300+ ft., I took shots looking up at the same 9,900' mountain with both GX7 and E-M5 II. I've taken the 300 mm E-M5 II shot and sized it down to match the 50 mm GX7 shot. <http://www.moosemystic.net/Gallery/tech/UV/CloudsRest.htm>

Yup, the Oly image is slightly cooler. Part of that could be the lens; who knows. However, the difference is so small that I can't imagine anyone who was there could notice anything off at all in WB, if only shown one version later. In fact, it seems to me that the Oly one is closer to my memory of that granite. :-)

These images were taken a week from Summer Solstice, early afternoon on the western edge of the time zone, so the depth of atmosphere between subjects and sun is about minimum, cloudless day.

Ergo, I'm not fretting further, nor bringing along filters for altitude, for anyplace on Earth I'm likely to be with my cameras. Nice to have one less thing to worry about when traveling. :-)
