I'm glad that OMC is paying the bill. Sounds like a successful outcome.

You might
remember that about a year ago my main outboard motor suffered a severe
over heating problem, somewhat illustrated in the photos above.

Today
I had the opportunity to call in on the repair man, and this is what he
told me (short version).

The motor overheated because the keyway in
the core of the water-pump impeller (connecting the drive-shaft with the
impeller) sheared, so that the impeller didn't turn and pump the cooling
water through the motor.

He discovered that unlike what he was used
to, the material in the core of the rubber (with fins) was made of some
kind of ??fibreglass material which just could not take the strain, and
crumbled. Usually these things are made of brass or bronze and do not
fail like this.

The OMC Corporation in the USA have accepted
responsibility for the failure and will be paying for the repairs. Even
more, they have recalled all of the impellers with the fibreglass core.

The motor is in bits, but surprisingly has little damage and is hardly
worn - this is a 1972 motor that I have owned since about 1975 ( with 30
years sitting idle, with periodic lubrication by me during those years).

The bores, crankshaft, pistons & bearings are in excellent shape. The
piston rings have been renewed, as have all top-end gaskets and some
sender units. The two cylinder heads had become warped and have been
replaced with two good used ones. He will repaint the overheated motor
exterior.

Needless to say I am delighted with the outcome, so far.

Cheers, Brian
