I didn't know it either until after lunch at "City Steaks and Seafood" (a small but very good restaurant in [small village] Whitehall) I walked across the street to a little park and saw this: <http://zone-10.com/tope2/main.php?g2_itemId=20699> I was intrigued by the claim "Birthplace of the US Navy", decided to look it up so took this photo as a reminder. The US Navy doesn't claim that but you probably wouldn't want to tell that to the people of Whitehall. :-)

Amazing what you can learn from this list. I grew up in Scotia, New York,
not far from Lake George, and traveled all over the Adirondacks area as
both a kid and adult, and never heard this particular bit of history.

Quite interesting. I didn't know that little bit of history.

Now that you're read all about the Battle of Valcour Island

You'll understand what this plaque commemorates.

It's at this little village only a few miles from Lake George and at the
far southern tip of Lake Champlain where Benedict Arnold had his little
fleet of ships built. Of course, it was hardly enough to stop the
British
Navy but it did slow them down from reaching the Hudson.

Now, of course, if you go to the Navy's official website and brief
history
records you won't find any mention of the Battle of Valcour Island.
Probably because, if they did, they'd have to mention that unmentionable
name... Benedict Arnold.
