Thanks Jim. I found a cheaper sample of the lens after I bought this one,
but it didn't have a tripod collar, which I would consider essential with
this lens. It is so nicely balanced, I could probably get by with a
lighter tripod for many shots. As it is, with the 5D I've got plenty of
clean ISO speed. If someone would just come up with a wind-management
accessory so that blooms wouldn't blow out of the plain of focus ...

My first zooms were Nikkors, all push-pulls, so that's what I got used to.
I thought the dial-in zooms were second-rate until I realized that they
solved one common problem of the push-pulls, which is zoom creep. This
lens has some zoom creep, as does my old Adaptall-mount Tamron SP 80-200,
which we sort of adopted as the 80-200/2.8 that Olympus should have built.
This 200-400 reminds me of that lens. They are both heavy. I don't have a
head on my CF tripod that can cope with the weight, so my old Bogen gets
some use. I'm glad I never got rid of that tripod. There are some shots I
can get with the focal length and working distance of the 200-400 that I
can't get with my 90mm. Theoretically it should be possible, but it
doesn't work out that way for me.
