  The house in which I grew up (built in 1830's) had three kitchens, all in
a vertical row, with a dumb waiter to connect them. It was never used for
its intended purpose when we lived there, but my sisters and I had great
fun using it as a shortcut between floors (it was about 3"x3"x2" inside)
until our Dad caught us. He promptly screwed the doors shut. Our next
adventure was trying to figure out how to get into the cistern in the 5'
crawlspace under the house.
