A long time ago I was in love with a girl from the theatre who was an ICU
nurse. Thing was, she decided at some point that she loved some other guy
instead and dropped me. Not the smartest move on her part, since he turned
out to be an abusive alcoholic drug addict. They were divorced two years
later, something I found out later.

A couple of years after that, I met Sheri and realized exactly who I was
meant to be with. We just celebrated 28 this past August.

Funny thing - when I started to work at the hospital, I got a helpdesk
ticket from an ICU nurse with the same first name but a different last
name. Turned out to be the same woman, although now married to someone
else. I eventually got up the nerve to go see her. She was as surprised
as I was. We had a long talk, starting with her apologizing to me for
being a b***ch and treating me the way she did. She realized that being
married to a "bad boy" wasn't all that it was cracked up to be and also put
her career in jeopardy...

I told her that it was OK, we all do stupid things when we're young, and I
wasn't really sure of myself either. Also, I told her that I had to be
honest and that I did a little happy dance when I learned that Prince
Charming and she got divorced, something I wasn't necessarily proud of but
felt like doing at the time. She laughed and said she understood.

It was a very nice conversation, and I found out that she'd been married
for years to an EKG technician at the hospital and that they had a
daughter. We hugged and agreed that we'd both like to be friends. I'm also
friends with her husband, who knows of our past but also knows that it was
another lifetime ago. I did meet her daughter once, which was a weird
"what if" moment for me... I mean, we're not friends to the point where
the four of us can go to dinner (that would just be weird), but we're
friends enough.

But it's obvious that things worked out the way they should have.
