I would still rather put my trust in the long droopy blades than to embark on a ride in an Osprey. I conducted one of the first wind tunnel tests on the original Bell proposed configuration, way back in 1952-53. I had a lot of respect for the late Bob Lichten of Bell Aircraft, but never did care much for this creation.

I was talking to a Brit ex-chopper pilot a couple of days ago and he said
that that long droopy blade gave a fair amount of vibration when you got above
60kts.

Nice work Jim. Reminds me that every time I saw a Huey at rest I had to
wonder how that long droopy blade kept us up.

Thanks, Chris. With reference to your conversation with Chuck, I read
that the size and basic dimensions were dictated by a stated requirement
that, with some disassembly, the craft could be transported in a C-130.

Maybe ChrisT will add to the story.

They were well captured, Jim; I like that composition.

As I approached the airport today, I saw two helicopters on approach. I

I spoke with one of the pilots, who said these were the newest aircraft in
the Army fleet, on their way from the factory to a base in Texas. The
ferry crews were all Army personnel.

Here are the four, lined up for refueling.

And, yes, the line girl was in charge of the fueling, though she had a
helper. She always does a great job.
