As for the pirates, we have a pirate festival here in Damariscotta, Maine,
in the summer. It's early days were cheesy in the extreme, but they've got
their act together and now it's a fun day for anyone who wants to join in.
Pirate ship (two masted coastal schooner) sails up the river, fires off a
few cannon shots. Pirates invade the town. Kids join the fun after getting
their faces painted, etc. Main Street is closed off as the pirates and the
kids "rob" the bank and flee with the police in hot pursuit. Food, beer and
snarls of traffic. I usually stay away, but every now and again I get
caught up in it. Same thing writ large happens Columbus Day with the
weekend long Pumpkin Festival. One of these years I'll take it upon myself
to actually photograph it. Nothing beats the sight of giant pumpkins
hollowed out and fitted with outboard motors.
