to Spain, either by boat or by jumping the fence surrounding the Spanish
enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla on the north coast of Morocco. The young men
often start their climb on the social ladder by selling clothes, counterfeit
sunglasses and the like on the beaches:

In winter they tend to offer DVDs in bars. People accept them, partly because
they are polite and not pushy (you decline once and they do not try to push you
to buy), they do not commit crimes, and many Spaniards can remember when Spain
was a country which sent hundreds of thousands of economic migrants to Northern
Europe-
